Example #1:

A middle school in Dallas is planning an end-of-year field trip for its 150 eighth grade students. The teachers want to take the kids to the Dallas Zoo for a fun and educational day. Since the school buses cannot accommodate all the students at once, the teachers decide to book a charter bus rental for the trip. They find a company that can provide two 56-passenger charter buses to transport the students. The company quotes them $165 per hour for each bus. The teachers need the buses from 8:30am to 4:00pm, so that’s 7.5 hours total. At $165 per hour, the total cost for the two buses is $2,475. The charter bus company also charges a 10% fuel surcharge, which brings the total to $2,722.50. For 150 students, that comes out to only $18 per student for safe, comfortable transportation and a great learning experience at the zoo. The teachers are happy with the reasonable price and look forward to a successful field trip.

The bus costs $150 per hour, and she estimates needing it for 3 hours with traffic, totaling $450. On Thursday, she rents the charter bus again to take the team to an off-site ropes course she booked for team building activities. The bus is rented for 8 hours at $150 per hour, costing $1,200. On Friday, the group visits the new corporate headquarters in Dallas for meetings and tours. She arranges the same 30-passenger charter bus for a flat rate of $900 for the day. For all 3 days, the total cost of the Dallas charter bus rental is $2,550. She tips the driver 10% at the end for excellent service, adding $255. To celebrate, the coaches want to arrange a fun outing for the team to Six Flags Over Texas amusement park in Arlington as a reward. The team has 45 players, 5 coaches, and needs space for some coolers and equipment as well. After getting quotes, the coaches decide to book a 56-passenger charter bus rental for the day. The charter bus company gives them a quote of $150 per hour, with a 5 hour minimum. Since the coaches want the bus from 8am to 8pm to allow for traffic and dinner after, the total rental time is 12 hours. At $150 per hour, their total quote comes out to $1,800. The charter bus company requires a 10% deposit to officially book the bus, so the coaches put down $180 upfront. They also plan to tip the driver 10% at the end of the trip as a thank you for providing safe transportation, which will add approximately $180 to the total cost.
